Vote to Select the Winners of the Tech Jam Awards

The nominations have been made and the judges have selected the finalists. Now it's up to you to select the 2017 Tech Jam Award winners.

Voting is open until 11:59 pm October 18.
Note: A finalist in more than one category is eligible to win only one award, so select the category you think is most fitting.

Winners will be announced at the 2017 Tech Jam Awards Ceremony at 4:30 pm Friday, October 20 at the Tech Jam event at the Champlain Valley Expo. Plan to join us to support your favorites and to celebrate all of the nominees and finalists.

Here are the award categories and the finalists:

Innovation Award
The Innovation Award recognizes any product or service that demonstrates exciting thinking and market momentum. The purpose of this award is to inspire and reward excellence and shine a spotlight on Vermont as a home to innovation. This award is presented by BTV Ignite.

Finalists:

Benchmark Space Systems
Formerly known as Greenscale, this team has developed technology in partnership with UVM for the rapidly growing cube satellite market that will increase access to space for students and scientists. They’re set to launch into space on multiple vehicles in 2018. More at www.benchmark-space.com

Dealer Policy                    
DealerPolicy has disrupted the insurance industry by creating an online platform that enables prospective car buyers to receive multiple competitive insurance quotes at the dealership in less than two minutes, helping customers save an average of $720 per year.  More at www.dealerpolicy.com.

GameTheory                    
GameTheory bridges the gap between game methodology and the business community by bringing games outside of the entertainment space and into other industries to drive change and meet goals, using the power of fun and engagement. More at www.gametheoryco.com.

Protean               
Imagine a platform that combines the best of Facebook, LinkedIn and Snapchat, but all built around education and creating portable, personalized learning plans for K-12 students – that’s Protean.  More at www.protean.me.

MindStream     
Step Ahead Innovations’ MindStream is a Wi-Fi-enabled aquarium monitor that replaces manual tests with automated tracking and balancing of ten vital water parameters – and it’s a technology with potential for other water monitoring applications.  More at www.mindstreamh2o.com.

Ambassador Award
The Ambassador Award recognizes a business, organization or individual who leads the support, promotion and growth of Vermont’s tech economy and ecosystem. The purpose of this award is to celebrate and motivate collaboration, and recognize good actors across Vermont’s technology sector.

 

Finalists:

Rob Hale
An active supporter of and participant in Vermont’s tech scene, Rob is behind the annual Vermont Code Camp and supports a range of tech activities, including as a BTV Ignite (where he is an Executive Fellow), Innovation Week, HackVT, Vermont.net user group and meetups. David Feinauer                
This assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Norwich leads the school’s innovation and entrepreneurship efforts, and had the vision to bring First Lego League to Vermont, establishing an annual state-level competition for Vermont youth. More at thenorwichrecord.com.

Maureen McElaney                       
An active member of the Burlington tech community since founding Girl Develop It Burlington in 2013, Maureen’s activities have included organizer of the UX Burlington conferences, advisor for LaunchVT, BTV Ignite Executive Fellow, and administrator for the BTV Dev Slack community.  More at www.linkedin.com/in/maureenmcelaney.

Kip Steele
Kip is plugged into the Burlington tech scene, including serving as an Executive Fellow for BTV Ignite. He organizes events, shares VR technology in the community, and works with UVM students on internships, and tech and entrepreneurship projects. More at www.linkedin.com/in/kipsteele.

Abbie Tykocki  
A marketing & PR maven for Burlington Telecom, Abbie’s community outreach includes Executive Fellow and Innovation Week organizer roles for BTV Ignite, advocacy for net neutrality protection, and a partnership with ReSOURCE to subsidize computers to low-income families.  More at www.burlingtontelecom.com.

Startup Award
The Startup Award recognizes a tech-based business or individual business entrepreneur that started in Vermont during the past 24 months, and demonstrates exceptional creativity, ambition, organization and market potential. Its purpose is to recognize and celebrate Vermont’s homegrown entrepreneurial spirit.

Finalists:

AllYouCanTech VT
Artur Adib started AllYouCanTech this summer to connect tech employers and job seekers in Vermont, and to highlight the state’s tech economy, including guest bloggers and articles that showcase Vermont’s tech scene. More at www.allyoucantech.com.

Majorwise         
Majorwise is an online platform connects students with the gig economy, simplifying the job search process and helping them gain the knowledge and experience to succeed in their fields. More at https://getmajorwise.com.

Packetized Energy
A spinoff from UVM research and development, this startup is developing products to balance electric power supply and demand with water heaters and other devices to better manage costs and integrate renewable energy in the power grid. More at www.packetizedenergy.com.

Protean
This e-portfolio tool enables students and teachers to capture and track learning that happens anywhere, anytime, and is being piloted in more than 2000 schools. More at www.protean.me.

Wildfire
Felix Wai created this online site to connect people who want to volunteer with the non-profit organizations that need their support, featuring opportunities with a number of area organizations. More at  https://spreadwildfire.com.

Newcomer Award
This award is given to an energetic and exciting new entrant into Vermont’s technology scene over the last 24 months, this award demonstrates Vermont’s “pull” as a technology hub and recognizes new talent that calls Vermont home.

Finalists:

Jake Blend

Since joining Generator two years ago, prototype shop leader Jake Blend has earned a reputation as a creative artist/tinkerer. He's been named Maker of the Year at the Champlain Mini Maker Faire, and has earned recognition from the event's Adopt-a-Maker program and the Road Pitch Challenge. Sean Kio
Graphic designer, webmaster, and social media strategist for Burlington Telecom, Sean redesigned BT's website, led monthly social media sessions for City of Burlington staff, and donates design time to non-profits, including BTV Ignite.  More at www.burlingtontelecom.com.

MajorWise        

This startup created by two UVM student entrepreneurs (and winner of the LaunchVT competition) has been on a growth path since its launch in 2016, finding short-term jobs and internships for college students, and expanding into high schools.  More at https://getmajorwise.com.
