New Program Offers Incentive to Relocate to Vermont for Tech and Other Jobs
Monday, December 30, 2019
Vermont tech and other businesses will have an additional incentive to help with their efforts to recruit employees to Vermont with the launch of the New Worker Relocation Grant Program starting January 1 2020.
The program offers new residents who move to Vermont to work full-time for a Vermont employer on or after January 1 an opportunity to receive reimbursement for relocation and job-related expenses of up to $5000 for those in Chittenden County and greater Barre-Montpelier area, or up to $7,500 if working in other areas of the state.
This new program is in addition to the Remote Worker Grant Program, which provides funding to help pay the relocation expanses of people who move to Vermont with full-time jobs with out-of-state businesses.
Both programs are supported by the Vermont Technology Alliance as a way to help draw the attention of tech professionals to the jobs, lifestyle and communities of Vermont. The Remote Worker Incentive Program garnered extensive media coverage and the vtTA received inquiries from interested tech workers as a result.
The New Worker Relocation Grant Program can be an additional incentive to attract the attention of those interested in opportunities in Vermont and that Vermont tech businesses and business hiring tech workers can use to attract out-of-state candidates to fill open positions.
Participants must be employed in an occupation identified by the Vermont Department of Labor in its 2016–2026 Long Term Occupational Projections and the pay meets the minimum wage requirement for the position. Eligible positions applicable to tech include software developers, computer systems analysts, network and computer systems administrators, information security analysts, computer user and network support specialists, technicians, and sales, marketing and management positions.
Expenses eligible for reimbursement are relocation expenses, including closing costs, lease deposits, first month’s rent, hiring a moving company, renting moving equipment, shipping, and the cost of moving supplies. Also eligible are job-related expenses that are not provided by the employer, including connectivity, specialized tools and equipment, and co-working space membership fees.
